To Think European
To think European – what does it really mean: To observe boundaries and to overcome borders?
Roots and references to personal regional
traditions are necessary for the development of identity. (This reference
mustn’t be confused with nationalism. Ultimately, every nation is an artificial
construction – concrete geographical borders between European nations are the
product of a historical process of partly arbitrary political decisions.
Awareness and consciousness of “my own self” is always the precondition for frankness and openness for “the strange”. The development of a European identity, of a European awareness, needs continuous integration of “other” regional traditions into the own consciousness. This integration of “the strange” is possible only through communication and meeting, by real experiences. Therefore, a fundamental task of schools is to arrange ample possibilities of coming to know each other.

Which conditions for realization do already exist, where are institutional or personal deficiencies?
How to create the necessary conditions? What do students (at the age of 12, 16, 19) need to know about themselves, about their roots and regions and about other European regions in order to be able to think European?
